Six Out of Ten Indians Receive Daily Spam Calls as Airtel Launches AI-Driven Detection Solution

A recent study reveals that six out of ten individuals in India receive at least three spam calls daily while nine out of ten receive spam text messages on their mobile phones each day. This alarming trend places India fourth globally in terms of spam calls. Sovan Mukherjee the Chief Executive Officer of Bharti Airtel in Uttar Pradesh shared these insights during a presentation on Thursday.

Mukherjee emphasized that a significant portion of financial fraud and scams originate from unsolicited phone calls or messages that urge recipients to take immediate action to resolve issues. In response to this growing problem Bharti Airtel has launched an artificial intelligence-driven spam detection solution that has already flagged over 1.12 crore spam phone calls for its customers in Uttar Pradesh within just one week. Additionally the company reported that similar alerts have been issued for approximately 6 lakh spam text messages.

The AI solution is available to all Airtel customers free of charge and has been developed through a year-long process that integrates security filters from the mobile network AI technology the company's database and an algorithm designed to analyze call and message patterns in milliseconds. This advanced system examines the historical data of phone numbers to determine if the number making the call also receives incoming calls and exchanges messages.

The system scrutinizes the sender's usage pattern to identify suspicious activity. If the algorithm detects that there is no exchange of calls or messages associated with a particular number it flags that number as suspicious. To further address customer concerns the company has established a grievance redressal system that allows individuals to report issues related to spam calls and messages.

The central government has introduced specific prefixes 140 160 and 161 for all service and transactional calls to promote genuine financial products or services thereby enhancing consumer protection.
