Kerala CM Accuses Union Government of Undermining Federalism with 'One Nation, One Election'
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has expressed strong opposition to the Union government's proposal for 'one nation, one election,' alleging that it serves a hidden agenda aimed at weakening India's federal structure. In a statement, Vijayan accused the Sangh Parivar of attempting to shift India's electoral system towards a presidential model, which he argues could undermine the diversity inherent in the nation’s parliamentary democracy.
His comments come in light of the Union Cabinet's recent approval of the 'one nation, one election' initiative, as recommended by a committee led by former President Ram Nath Kovind. The committee's report suggests conducting simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies, followed by synchronized local body elections within a 100-day window.
Vijayan pointed out that each state has unique political dynamics and circumstances, asserting that conducting elections without considering these factors would jeopardize democratic principles. He emphasized that such a mechanical approach could effectively dismantle the people's mandate and destroy the essence of democracy.
He noted that the Union government's endorsement of the Kovind committee's recommendations followed a statement from Home Minister Amit Shah, who indicated that the implementation of the 'one nation, one election' initiative would occur during the current government's term.
Vijayan called on the democratic community in India to stand against what he described as an attempt by the BJP-led government to undermine the parliamentary system and the fundamental principles of the nation.
