A recent report from cybersecurity firm CloudSEK reveals alarming statistics indicating that scammers are registering over 1,000 phishing domains daily while also producing deepfake videos featuring prominent Indian personalities such as Mukesh Ambani and Virat Kohli to promote questionable gaming applications. These deepfake videos utilize manipulated footage of well-known news anchors to fabricate fake endorsements, misleading users into believing that these public figures support the dubious apps.
The report highlights that the deepfake technology is being used to create deceptive campaigns aimed at users in India, Pakistan, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, and other regions, targeting vulnerable individuals with promises of substantial financial gains from minimal investments. Users are enticed to believe they can easily multiply their money by engaging with these gaming applications.
Virat Kohli has emerged as one of the most frequently exploited figures for deepfake promotions within South Asia. The fraudulent videos often commence with altered clips of respected news anchors, including Shweta Singh from Aaj Tak, Arnab Goswami from Republic TV, and Sudhir Chaudhary. These manipulated broadcasts falsely assert that the mobile application enables individuals from diverse backgrounds to earn money effortlessly.
Initially, these scams targeted populations in the European Union in early September 2024 but have since expanded to regions including India, Nigeria, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Saudi Arabia, and Southeast Asia.
In response to these threats, CloudSEK has announced that it is making its deepfake detection technology available for free to assist users in identifying deepfake videos. The firm emphasized that scammers are not only utilizing these videos to lure individuals into downloading dubious apps but have also established counterfeit Play Store pages to enhance their credibility. The research underscores that more than 1,000 phishing domains are being created daily, posing significant risks to internet users across multiple countries.
