GSTN Restores July and August 2017 GST Returns Data on Portal

The Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN) announced on Sunday that it has restored the monthly returns data for July and August 2017, marking the initial months of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) rollout. This decision comes after requests from trade and industry stakeholders who sought additional time to download relevant data before it was archived.

The GSTN had previously indicated that, in accordance with its data policy, taxpayer data would only be retained for seven years. Consequently, GST returns for July 2017 were archived on August 1, 2024, and those for August 2017 were archived on September 1, 2024. The implementation of this policy raised concerns among businesses regarding access to historical data for future reference.

In its advisory, GSTN acknowledged the feedback from the trade community, stating, "In view of the requests received from the trade due to the difficulties faced, data has been restored back on the portal. We recommend you to download and save the data if needed, as the archival policy shall be implemented again after giving advance information."

Under GST law, taxpayers are not permitted to file their returns after a period of three years from the due date, emphasizing the importance of timely data retention and compliance.

The GST was implemented on July 1, 2017, and since then, it has undergone several changes aimed at improving the compliance framework and facilitating ease of doing business. The GSTN's restoration of historical data reflects its commitment to support taxpayers in navigating the complexities of the GST regime.

Businesses are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to secure their data before the archival policy is enforced again. The GSTN continues to work on enhancing its portal and services to better serve the needs of taxpayers across the country.
