Worldcoin Faces Scrutiny from Experts Amidst Expansion into Mexico

Worldcoin is facing increasing scrutiny from experts as its operator, Tools for Humanity, expands services in Mexico. On October 5, Mexican media reported that Worldcoin launched new World ID services and facilities in Puebla, adding to the four centers already operating in the city. The project’s goal is to ensure only "unique human beings" receive World IDs, which requires users to provide biometric data like iris scans. However, security experts and regulatory bodies in Mexico and other Latin American countries have raised concerns over the handling of sensitive personal data.

Concerns Over Data Privacy and Exploitation

Carlos Tlahuel, a security expert at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, warned citizens to question the necessity of providing biometric data, urging them to consider the potential risks involved. He emphasized the need for greater transparency from companies like Worldcoin about why such data is being collected. Similar concerns were echoed by Evin McMullen, co-founder of Privado ID, who highlighted the ethical issues of operating in regions with weaker legal protections.

Reports from Mexico suggest that many people providing their biometric data are immigrants from neighboring countries like Colombia. Allegations have surfaced that some third-party agents exploit immigrants, collecting their data without delivering the promised crypto assets. Despite these concerns, Worldcoin continues to expand across Latin America, recently announcing a move into Guatemala.
