Perplexity has announced the release of a native Mac app, bringing its advanced AI “answer engine” directly to desktops without needing a web browser. Now available through the Apple App Store, the new Mac app offers exclusive features such as Pro Search, a guided AI search for deeper exploration, voice and text prompting capabilities, and comprehensive answer sources for each response. Users can also create threaded conversations to ask follow-up questions while tracking prior searches through a convenient library feature.
Additionally, the app offers customizable keyboard shortcuts for quick access and an organized search experience. The desktop app itself is free, but accessing the full range of features requires a $20-per-month (or $200-per-year) Pro subscription. This plan provides up to 600 Pro Searches per day, options to select a preferred AI model, and functionality for analyzing uploaded files and images.
The launch follows Perplexity’s recent rollout of two new features, Internal Knowledge Search and Spaces. Internal Knowledge Search allows the AI to draw answers from both web sources and user-uploaded files, enhancing response relevance and accuracy. Spaces, meanwhile, enables collaborative interactions, similar to tools like ChatGPT’s Canvas and Claude’s Artifact.
This Mac app marks Perplexity’s fourth platform iteration, joining the company’s web, Android, and iOS versions released last year.
