PM Modi Inaugurates Semicon India 2024 Highlights Indias Ambitions to Become a Global Semiconductor Hub
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday emphasized that now is the ideal time to invest in India, citing the country's stable policies and an investor-friendly environment. He also underlined India’s commitment to becoming a global semiconductor powerhouse, assuring that the government would take all necessary measures to achieve this goal. PM Modi made these remarks while inaugurating the three-day Semicon India 2024 event in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh.
The Semicon India 2024 conference, taking place from September 11 to 13, is themed "Shaping the Semiconductor Future." The event aims to showcase India's strategic approach and policies to position itself as a global leader in the semiconductor industry. During his inaugural address, PM Modi stated, "I can confidently say this is the right time to be in India. You are at the right place at the right time. In 21st century India, the chips are never down. Today, India assures the world that when the chips are down, you can bet on India."
Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, also speaking at the event, emphasized Prime Minister Modi's vision of democratizing access to technology. He pointed out that various initiatives, such as the Digital India Mission and the Telecom Mission, have brought technology into the hands of everyday citizens. Vaishnaw added that while India made its first attempts to develop a semiconductor industry nearly 60 years ago, it is only under PM Modi's leadership that these efforts have seen significant success. "The semiconductor industry is foundational, with chips being used in everything from medical instruments, mobile phones, and laptops to cars, trains, and televisions. After many attempts, it is under PM Modi's leadership that we have succeeded in establishing the semiconductor industry in our country," he said.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who was present at the conference, highlighted the strides made by the state in recent years. "As a result of the efforts made by the Uttar Pradesh government, nearly 50 percent of the total mobile phone components are now produced in the state. UP has emerged as a major exporter of consumer electronics," Adityanath noted. He also mentioned that Samsung India has set up a display manufacturing plant in Noida, further cementing the state as a hub for data centers and electronics manufacturing.
Ajit Manocha, President of Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International, stressed the need to support India's ambitious vision for exponential growth in the semiconductor sector. He remarked, "The semiconductor industry is foundational to every industry in the world. We are facing unprecedented challenges, but also unprecedented opportunities and actions underway in India. This growth is not just beneficial for India, but for the entire world and humanity."
The Semicon India 2024 event is expected to attract participation from over 250 exhibitors and 150 speakers, including several industry leaders, who will discuss and showcase India's potential to become a global semiconductor hub.
