South Korean Police Arrest Seven in Crypto-Fueled Drug Trafficking Operation
Authorities in South Jeolla Province, South Korea, have apprehended seven individuals connected to a drug trafficking network that utilized cryptocurrency for transactions. According to law enforcement, the group is believed to have smuggled methamphetamine into the country from abroad.
On September 23, police reported the arrest of a 33-year-old individual suspected of organizing the drug operation, charged with violating the Narcotics Control Act. In addition, six others, aged between 20 and 49, were charged for purchasing and using methamphetamine.
Investigators allege that the prime suspect collaborated with a drug distribution ring, concealing methamphetamine in 118 locations across Gwangju’s West and North districts between March and April. Payments were reportedly made using unspecified cryptocurrencies.
The suspect employed creative methods to hide the narcotics, stashing them in secluded areas such as under a tree in a mountainous region. Drugs were also concealed in everyday locations, including a fire hose, an outdoor air conditioning unit, and even inside a communication terminal box. Authorities said the suspect used plastic, paper, and double-sided tape to secure the hidden packages at these "dead drop" sites.
The case has now been handed over to prosecutors for further legal proceedings.
