OpenAI Japan CEO Reveals GPT-Next: A Model 100 Times More Powerful Than GPT-4

At the KDDI Summit 2024, Tadao Nagasaki, CEO of OpenAI Japan, unveiled groundbreaking details about the next-generation AI model, GPT-Next. According to Nagasaki, GPT-Next is set to be 100 times more powerful than its predecessor, GPT-4. This impressive leap in performance is attributed to advancements in the model’s architecture rather than a significant increase in computing resources. The model will reportedly incorporate a scaled-down version of OpenAI’s enigmatic Project Strawberry.

During his presentation, Nagasaki emphasized OpenAI’s ongoing commitment to advancing AI technology and enhancing communication. He also noted that GPT-Next is poised to represent a major leap forward in the AI landscape, marking a significant upgrade over GPT-3 and GPT-4.

In addition to discussing GPT-Next, Nagasaki highlighted that ChatGPT has surpassed 200 million active users as of August, making it the fastest software to reach the 100-200 million user milestone. He praised the software for its user-friendly interface, which has contributed to its rapid adoption. Furthermore, he noted that ChatGPT Enterprise is experiencing increased uptake among businesses.

Nagasaki elaborated on OpenAI’s global presence, which includes offices in the US, the UK, and Japan. He explained that Japan was chosen as the first base for OpenAI in Asia due to the country’s strong tradition of embracing innovation and new technologies. He also reflected on his own career, mentioning his prior role as CEO of Amazon Web Services Japan from 2011 to 2024 before joining OpenAI.

OpenAI, with around 2,000 employees globally—half of whom are dedicated to AI development—is focused on supporting the creation of an AI-driven future. According to Nagasaki, the exponential growth of AI technology underscores OpenAI’s mission to advance and integrate AI solutions into various facets of life.
