FSIB Nominates Ashok Chandra as Next Managing Director of Punjab National Bank
The Financial Services Institutions Bureau (FSIB), tasked with selecting top executives for state-owned banks, has recommended Ashok Chandra for the role of Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Punjab National Bank (PNB). Chandra, who currently serves as the Executive Director of Canara Bank, emerged as FSIB's top choice following an interview process involving 16 qualified candidates.
In its official statement, FSIB cited Chandra's performance, extensive banking experience, and alignment with organizational parameters as the basis for the nomination. However, the recommendation awaits final approval from the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
FSIB, led by former Department of Personnel and Training Secretary Bhanu Pratap Sharma, includes key figures in banking such as Animesh Chauhan, ex-chairman of Oriental Bank of Commerce; Deepak Singhal, former Executive Director of the RBI; and Shailendra Bhandari, previous MD of ING Vysya Bank.
Chandra’s career in banking began with Corporation Bank in 1991 as a Probationary Officer. Holding a Master’s degree in Economics and being a Certified Associate of the Indian Institute of Bankers, Chandra brings decades of expertise to this prospective new role with one of India’s leading public sector banks.
