DHS Disrupts Over 500 Ransomware Attacks, Recovers Billions in Cryptocurrency Since 2021

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has successfully disrupted 537 ransomware attacks and reclaimed billions in cryptocurrency since 2021, according to a report from Bloomberg. The effort, led by the Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Cyber Crimes Center, has played a crucial role in protecting U.S. government agencies, which have been prime targets for these cyber threats.

HSI's proactive approach involves monitoring internet traffic, analyzing potential vulnerabilities, and tracking emerging ransomware tactics. This strategy has enabled them to detect and prevent attacks before significant damage could occur, although building legal cases against hackers remains a challenge when attacks are stopped preemptively.

Major Focus on U.S. Government Agencies

HSI Deputy Assistant Director Mike Prado revealed that 21% of the prevented attacks were aimed at U.S. government agencies, more than any other sector. The division has also recovered $4.3 billion in extorted digital assets from exchanges and hacker devices since its inception. Additionally, HSI continues to monitor cybercriminal groups outside the U.S., aiming to prevent further attacks.

Rising Threats and Payments in Ransomware Landscape

Despite these efforts, the overall ransomware threat is rising. According to a mid-year update from Chainalysis, ransomware payments in 2024 increased by 2%, reaching $459.8 million. The size of individual ransomware payments has grown significantly, with one group, Dark Angels, receiving a record $75 million payment in July 2024.

Phishing Scams Impact Crypto Users

Phishing scams remain a significant issue for cryptocurrency users, leading to major financial losses. In September alone, 10,805 individuals lost over $46 million to phishing attacks. The total phishing-related losses during Q3 2024 reached $126 million, with two major incidents accounting for $87 million of these losses.
