Argentine Authorities Bust Bitcoin Mining Hardware Smuggling Operation

In a significant enforcement action, Argentina’s tax authority, the Administración Federal de Ingresos Públicos (AFIP), in collaboration with the Argentine Naval Prefecture (PNA), has dismantled a major smuggling operation involving Bitcoin mining equipment. This joint "mega-operation" saw multiple raids across key locations, targeting individuals suspected of illegally importing cryptocurrency mining hardware.

Local media outlets, La Capital Mar Del Plata and 0223, reported that the group had been smuggling a variety of high-end electronic devices, including video cards, cell phones, and components specifically designed for cryptocurrency mining, into the country. Additionally, authorities suspect that the group laundered its earnings through crypto investments to conceal their illicit activities.

During the raids, authorities seized substantial amounts of cash and equipment. Among the confiscated items were numerous boxes branded with the Canaan logo—a well-known manufacturer of ASIC Bitcoin mining rigs. Under Argentine law, only licensed entities are permitted to import such hardware, adding to the severity of the charges against the group.

Images released by the authorities showed armed officers standing in front of what appeared to be a clothing store, suggesting the possibility that the smugglers may have used small businesses as fronts for storing and distributing the crypto mining equipment.

The operation, which took place in the coastal city of Mar del Plata and Bahía Blanca in Buenos Aires Province, resulted in the arrest of four individuals—two men and two women—who are now facing charges related to smuggling and money laundering. Authorities also seized over $31,000 in Argentine pesos, $19,000 in U.S. dollars, various electronic devices, a motor vehicle, and important documents believed to be linked to the criminal operation.

In total, the value of the confiscated assets is estimated to exceed $624,000. The investigation is ongoing as authorities seek to uncover further connections to the smuggling network.

This recent operation underscores Argentina's intensified efforts to combat illegal cryptocurrency activities, following previous crackdowns on unauthorized Bitcoin mining farms and a recent pledge by the AFIP to target unlawful Worldcoin resellers.
